galette du roi!

Sunday, January 28th, 2007

ok.

i thought that i was sooo cool in trying to get acclimated to the time change early - even prior to arriving in paris. well guess what … it didn’t work! i slept all morning and half the afternoon on saturday and today, sunday, i slept the whole morning! so much for that!

the weather has still been chilly. i think it’s getting warm though. let’s hope.

my friend steph bought this pastry called ‘la galette du roi’ otherwise translated as cake of the king (epiphany). i guess it’s done when during january, but the custom is to slice the galette into pieces and whoever get’s the favor, is crowned king or queen. the traditional flavor is almond and when i was first offered a piece, i only asked for a little bit - just to taste it, but after tasting it, i wanted to eat the whole thing!

la galette du roi la feve

the tradition continues like this: the youngest person at the party would duck under the table. the person who sliced the galette would ask the youngest to whom each piece belongs. the youngest would then allocate a piece to each person. again, whomever gets the fève = bean, which is what they put in galettes a long time ago, is crowned king (roi) or queen (reine).

well, guess who is queen??? but of course! MOI!!! and it was not even planned! i even got a crown! i kinda felt silly sitting under the little table since i’m HUGE compared to it … but it was fun and i got to experience the galette. i’ve always wanted to since the girl in my french talking group experienced it when she went to france for christmas with her boyfriend. i’ll get to share my story with them as well as some pictures. ooooh it would be sooo cool if i can bring a of these galettes home.
